Gulf Fritillary

P1160325

This is the Gulf Fritillary. Like the Tiger Swallowtail, it’s pretty common here in the south (South Carolina, I mean.) I somewhat prefer the bright colors of the swallowtail, but the fritillary has a glory all it’s own. In addition to that lovely rust red color and the bold black markings, the white spots on the fritillary’s wings are actually metallic silver, not white, and glint quite nicely in the sun.
