“Blessed with abundant mineral resources in the Tyalar mountains and a well balanced forest with an above-average population of Kring trees, Emprin is the perfect place to start a business or build a factory. We already have a profusion of modern manufacturers producing every kind of high-tech good imaginable, so local supply can be arranged for almost any project, and our top tier technical schools ensure that you will be able to find as many skilled workers as you need.”
-Excerpt from a business investment brochure put out by the Emprin Commerce Department, 1932 YL
“The mountains are riddled with underground factories putting out every kind of military vehicle imaginable. I think the Warlord here is trying to beat out HarDasheg and ArTaren over in Akati for who’s going to supply the Imperial Army. It looks like they really are preparing for war with New Irtralla. The good news is, I already have four job offers. They need all the threeprint technicians they can get.”
-Evin NarKalo, in a letter to his parents, 1932 YL
This chapter is part of the in-progress serial web novel The Unbroken Blade, intended to be book one in The Shattered Empire trilogy, and features a mix of sci-fi and thematic elements reminiscent of near-future military fiction such as Gasaraki or Isaac Hooke’s Atlas series and sci-fi combat classics such as Mechwarrior/Battletech and Gundam. The story is rich with battle and conflicts of honor and conscience arising around a civil war on the forested world of Dankar, far from our own, but is primarily focused on how the main characters deal with the challenges they face, not their machines or their world.
