“The harex at the heart of the army has fallen. HarVareg is dead, and all his sons, and all that is left is this one branch that still bears leaves on the severed bole.
Shall I be grafted into another tree? Flee to the capital to find comfort in a husband and children?
Husbands and children die, but the name of my family will not. I will take up my father’s sword and carve our name so deep into Irtralla that ages after I’m gone, they’ll still look back to see HarVareg burning across its corpse and say of us, ‘Those were Ankadarul.’
Come now, and follow my father’s sword, or be remembered as men who feared to tread where a woman had courage to go.”
-Darra Priana HarVareg. 1893 YL. Excerpt from the third season of the teleplay Lords of the West, based closely on events from the fourth great war between the Irtrallan Hegemony and the Empire. This series received awards from the Imperial Council of the Arts, the Imperial Council of History, and the Artists Caste Assembly, an 8.5 out of 10 on VidGuide (averaged from over twenty thousand reviews), and the Emperor’s personal endorsement.
This chapter is part of the in-progress serial web novel The Unbroken Blade, intended to be book one in The Shattered Empire trilogy, and features a mix of sci-fi and thematic elements reminiscent of near-future military fiction such as Gasaraki or Isaac Hooke’s Atlas series and sci-fi combat classics such as Mechwarrior/Battletech and Gundam. The story is rich with battle and conflicts of honor and conscience arising around a civil war on the forested world of Dankar, far from our own, but is primarily focused on how the main characters deal with the challenges they face, not their machines or their world.
